To replace a piece of vinyl siding, unlock the panel above with a zip tool, pull the nails from the damaged panel, slide it out, then nail in a new piece cut to length and press the upper panel back into its lock. Buy the same profile and color first, and leave room for expansion.

What you will need
  • Zip (unlocking) tool
  • Flat pry bar
  • Hammer and corrosion-resistant nails
  • Tin snips or fine-tooth blade
  • Tape measure and pencil
  • Replacement panel (same profile and color)
  • Snap-lock punch (for top-course cuts)

Before you start: match the panel

Most failed vinyl repairs fail on the match. Note the profile (traditional lap, Dutch lap, board-and-batten), the exposure (the visible height of each course), the thickness and the color. Take a cut sample to a siding supplier. If your siding is faded or discontinued, a spare piece from a hidden area, such as behind a deck or low on a back wall, can be swapped in for the visible damage, and the new panel goes where nobody will see it.

How to replace a piece of vinyl siding

  1. Unlock the panel above. Slide the zip tool under the bottom lip of the panel above the damage and pull along its length to release the lock.
  2. Remove the nails. Hold the upper panel out of the way and pull the nails through the damaged panel’s slots with a flat pry bar.
  3. Slide out the damaged piece. Unhook it from the panel below and remove it, then check the house wrap and sheathing behind for tears or moisture.
  4. Cut and fit the new piece. Measure, cut to length leaving a small expansion gap at each end, and hook it into the lock of the panel below.
  5. Nail it loosely. Drive nails in the center of the slots about every 16 inches, stopping with a small gap under the head so the panel can move.
  6. Re-lock the upper panel. Press the panel above back down onto the new piece, working from one end to the other until it snaps into place.

Replacing a longer section or a strip

The method is the same for a longer run: unlock the course above along its full length, remove the damaged panels in order, and install new panels from the bottom up so each panel locks into the one below. Overlap seams between panels by about an inch, and stagger them from the course above so they do not line up. Leave a small gap at each end inside J-channel or corner posts, because vinyl grows in heat.

The top course and tricky spots

Under a window, at the eave or on the top course there is no panel above to unlock, so the new piece cannot be nailed through its hem. Pros cut off the nailing hem, punch raised tabs into the cut edge with a snap-lock punch, and use color-matched nails or trim to hide the fastening. This is the point where many homeowners choose to call someone.

Matching siding on Annapolis homes

Older homes in Germantown and Annapolis Neck often carry decades-old vinyl that has faded unevenly, so a brand-new panel can stand out. If the wall is badly faded, replace the damaged piece with one taken from a hidden elevation, or consider replacing the whole wall rather than leaving a patchwork.

Let StormGuard Siding do it

If you would rather not climb a ladder, StormGuard Siding's emergency vinyl siding repair team replaces single panels and short sections, checks the house wrap behind them and matches color and profile as closely as available. Send a photo of the damage and the crew members will tell you what is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace one piece of vinyl siding without removing the whole wall?

Yes. Only the panels above the damage need to be unlocked temporarily. The rest of the wall stays in place.

Where do I get a matching vinyl siding panel?

Start with a local siding supplier and bring a sample of your panel. If it is discontinued, a spare piece from a hidden wall is often the closest match.

How far apart do you nail vinyl siding?

About every 16 inches along the nailing hem, centered in the slots and left slightly loose so the panel can expand and contract.

How long does a single panel replacement take?

For an accessible panel, often well under an hour once you have the right piece. Corners, top courses and matching problems take longer.
